What I have so far....
This is what I have written so far of the NIU shooting. This is very rough draft of what I so far. A better, more grammatically correct version, will come soon.
After the shooting
On Thursday I had it all planned out. I was going to go over to Neptune Hall and talk to the Community Advisor responsible for the event coming up. The Fresh Prince of Pickup Artist a panel of women discussing how to talk to women. It was supposed to happen before Valentines’ Day so they could have a date by then. I was just about to leave when I noticed the check in desk was put in front of the doorway. It was mid afternoon why would they do this? People were on their cell phones calling people urgently, it made no sense. I looked around wondering what was happening when I heard two students standing in front of me say,” It’s on the TV right now let’s check it out.”
Before they could speed away from me I asked, “Wait! What’s happening on TV?” I Hoped for an answer I they me gave one,” There was a shooting on campus. It’s on the news.” I couldn’t believe it. This changed everything. I didn’t know how, just it would just that things would be different from here on out. I walked over with them to television in the dining area across from the cafeteria. People were intently viewing the screens to see what had just happened.
I knew then I had to make a move. The story about approaching women was dead so I had take charge of this situation. How would I do that? I’m not a part of the college newspaper or any paper for that matter. Though I barely freelance because I said I was. I walked over to the other television by D tower where I lived. There the newscaster was talk the events that happened at Cole hall. Apparently, a shooter came in during a class in the big auditorium classroom and opened fire. The police were all over the place and the press was still trying to figure out what happened. Reports were still coming in about wounded the hospitals suddenly had here hands full and the campus was lockdown. Police even diverting traffic so people couldn’t go through the campus and helicopters were flying overhead obviously news crews trying to get a glimpse of what was going on.
I needed to head off in some direction I need do something. There was a group of African-American students in the North Entrance way who were talking about what just happened. It was all second hand information so I didn’t know how much o it was reliable. One guy with a baggy jeans and jacket looked like he just came from there and talking to the . “He came In threw the back were the stage was and looked up at everybody then he just blastin’ away at people. That’s what someone I knew told me I was just walking past there.” Drats, that’s no reliable source, I needed a first hand account. I had to back to the writing center quick to much time had past already.
Melissa would know what to do she was editor before she started working here at NIU. Walked in and saw her going through her email. The student who was supposed to show obviously didn’t since the news broke out. “Um, Hey.” I said, not sure what to say. You heard about what happened? “Yes.” she said “Well, I guess this means my original story is out of the question now. “
Before I ould do anything I had to call home it was almost four and I knew someone would be home by now.
Leaving for home was surprisingly hard. I had planned on coming to Elgin as few times as possible. My parents were obviously concerned about the shooting who wasn’t? When the illusion of security is shattered, there’s no such thing as overacting to parents. There was a girl on my floor who was packing up before they even said classes for Friday were canceled. All day people were emptying Stevenson Hall parents came by sad but relieved their kids were alright. Even thought they were technically adults since they were old to go to college they would still be children to them.
I was on my way over to Cole even of there would be cops but I came across something, a reporter. She was with the Daily Herald and she was trying to find someone who was there so she could write it up. I saw the opportunity right there in front of me. There were people in my tower who were there I could get them to talk to her. I remembered Quiten talking about someone on the third floor
